Abstract
Background: Cisplatin (CP) is a main chemotherapy but cause damage on different organs. Aim of the work: the current study assessed Cisplatin’s effect on retina and the protective role of N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Material and methodes: the experiment was done on 30 male adult albino rats divided into three groups as following; control (Group I), Cisplatin-treated group (single intraperitoneal injection (IP) of CP 7 mg/kg , Group II), N- acetylcysteine-treated group (single IP of CP 7 mg/kg+ orally NAC 200 mg/kg/ 14 d, Group III. On day 14 of Cisplatin administration, tissue samples were collected for histobiochemical and histomorphometrical analysis. Results: The results detected that CP lead to a significant increase in MDA level and decrease of total antioxidant and eNos levels in retinal tissue as compared to other groups. Moreover, CP caused histopathological degeneration in the retina while NAC could improve it. Conclusion: CP had toxic effects on retina with modulating effect of NAC.
